Rarely in my life have I come across an artist who’s output is as aligned with my own taste as Max Ulis. You might know him as one of Canada’s first dubstep DJs, a curator of the infamous Bass Coast festival and SLAB parties, or one half of house duo Sabota with Robbie Slade. But now let me introduce him as the guy who makes perfectly executed, bass-heavy club tracks that are dark in nature but colourful in spirit.

We’ve been in conversation for some time about these tracks, ever since he sent them to me I could tell he had way more bangers in his vault. I kept asking for more material and eventually settled on this trio which holds together like one of my own DJ sets. “Bird Song” is the kind of club warmup track that shows the audience you mean business. “Free 2 Be” turns the heat dial up but is still restrained, you don’t want to blow it before the headliner goes on. Finally, “Ill too” lets you lighten up the late-night mood without losing momentum, perhaps creating an opportunity for the dancers to get a little closer together…
